While it is always our goal to save your natural teeth, sometimes an extraction is necessary. This might be when a tooth is too damaged to save, when it is causing issues for other teeth, or in preparation for orthodontic treatment. Our goal when providing a tooth extraction is to make the overall experience as comfortable and as easy as possible for the patient.
The first step will be a digital X-rays of the tooth and the area that surrounds it. This is done to determine the safest possible method for removing the tooth. We will then provide any necessary sedation. Once the sedation has taken effect, we will use special dental equipment to quickly and efficiently pull the tooth from its socket. Most patients do not report feeling any pain during this time, but they may feel a sensation of pressure in the immediate area. This process can usually be completed very quickly.
Our experts will then work to control any bleeding that follows. The patient will need to bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes to form a blood clot. The patient must then take very careful precautions not to disturb the blood clot after the procedure. We encourage patients to avoid using a straw, rinsing vigorously, participating in intense exercise or consuming drugs or alcohol for at least 24 hours following a tooth extraction. Most patients will want to avoid chewing any tough foods in the days following a tooth extraction.
The recovery process following a tooth extraction usually takes a few days. During this time, the patient should take steps to keep the swelling down. This can be accomplished by applying an ice pack to the outer cheek near the extraction site. It is safe to apply the ice pack for up to 20 minutes at a time. Once the swelling has gone down, a warm compress can be applied to the same area for comfort. We will also encourage the patient to rinse out the extraction site with warm salt water in order to keep the area clean. But this can only be done after 24 hours. Once recovery is complete, we can then discuss tooth-replacement options if necessary.
